Saudi Arabia faces renewed scrutiny over 9/11 links

As the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, renewed scrutiny is being directed at potential links between the government of Saudi Arabia and the hijackers. This scrutiny is driven by a combination of civil litigation, previously classified FBI materials, and records obtained from British authorities. Victims’ families are currently pursuing a landmark federal lawsuit against the Kingdom, seeking further declassification of U.S. government records.

Newly surfaced footage has highlighted the activities of Omar al-Bayoumi, a central figure in the litigation. The footage shows Bayoumi and Anwar al-Awlaki, a future al-Qaeda leader, participating in combat-style paintball sessions near San Diego in the late 1990s. While the FBI possessed some of this material shortly after the 2001 attacks, it was not fully pursued at the time.

Saudi Arabia has consistently denied any involvement in or responsibility for the attacks. The U.S. government has not made any official finding that Saudi Arabia planned or ordered the terrorist attacks.
