Saudi Arabia launches National Greening Season and solar-based wildlife conservation

Saudi Arabia has launched the National Greening Season, a nationwide campaign designed to expand vegetation cover, combat desertification, and promote the use of native plant species. Led by the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification under the Saudi Green Initiative, the program aims to foster environmental volunteerism across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

In a separate environmental development, a 250-megawatt solar power installation near the Red Sea coastline is being utilized as a breeding ground for the threatened Arabian sand gazelle. Located within the Prince bin Salman Nature Reserve to support the Amaala resort, the solar park uses wildlife-proof fencing to protect the animals. Conservationists aim to grow the current population of 38 gazelles to over 500 to establish a self-sustaining population within the reserve, a concept referred to as ‘ReWildingVoltaics’.
