Saudi Arabia nuclear deal submitted to U.S. Congress
President Donald Trump has submitted a proposed 30-year civil nuclear energy agreement with Saudi Arabia to the U.S. Congress for review. The agreement, which was reached in July, would allow American companies to export civilian nuclear technology to the kingdom, including the construction of AP1000 reactors. The multi-billion dollar project is expected to benefit Westinghouse, a company jointly owned by Cameco and Brookfield Asset Management.
Trump has maintained that the agreement's implementation is contingent upon Saudi Arabia normalizing relations with Israel by joining the Abraham Accords. This condition faces significant diplomatic hurdles, as Saudi Arabia has repeatedly stated that formal recognition of Israel requires a clear and irreversible path toward the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Congress has 90 legislative days to review the proposal. If no objection is raised within this period, the agreement will enter into force. However, if Congress rejects the deal, the President retains the authority to use a veto, which can only be overridden by a two-thirds majority in both chambers. The submission has raised concerns among some lawmakers and non-proliferation experts regarding the potential for uranium enrichment on Saudi territory.
