Saudi Arabia nuclear program concerns rise over U.S. civil deal

Saudi Arabia has not ruled out the possibility of developing a nuclear weapons program, according to findings from U.S. intelligence. This development has sparked concern among U.S. lawmakers regarding a civil nuclear agreement signed by President Donald Trump. While the agreement aims to facilitate multi-billion dollar nuclear projects by American firms to strengthen bilateral ties, Democratic senators warn that it could allow for uranium enrichment levels of nearly 20%, potentially enabling military use.

Critics, including Senator Jeff Merkley, argue that the administration has conceded to Saudi demands and noted a lack of transparency regarding IAEA protocols. Former IAEA Director General Hans Blix has also warned Congress that the absence of additional inspections could allow the kingdom to pursue weapons in secret.

Saudi officials maintain that their nuclear program is “peaceful” and will be conducted with the “highest level of responsibility.” However, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously stated that the country would “follow the example of Iran” should it acquire a nuclear bomb. While Democrats are preparing legislation to block the deal, President Trump maintains the authority to veto such measures.
