Saudi Arabia receives UN award for land restoration efforts
Saudi Arabia has received the United Nations Global Leading Models for Land Restoration award in recognition of its efforts to develop vegetation cover and restore degraded lands. The honor was presented during the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) held in Mongolia.
Through its National Afforestation Program, the Kingdom has planted over 159 million trees and rehabilitated approximately one million hectares of degraded land. The initiative also includes the reintroduction of several endangered animal species and the establishment of a governance framework to combat drought, desertification, and climate change.
Looking toward the future, Saudi Arabia aims to rehabilitate more than 2.5 million hectares of land and plant 215 million trees by 2030. These efforts are part of broader long-term goals to rehabilitate 40 million hectares and plant 10 billion trees as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 framework.
