Saudi Arabia registers 26 national parks in protected areas registry

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification has officially registered 26 national parks in Saudi Arabia within the National Register of Protected Areas. This registration covers a total area exceeding 5,115 square kilometers.

This initiative includes updating the Kingdom’s data in the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) to ensure management aligns with international standards. The move aims to unify national references for protected areas, improve environmental planning efficiency, and support data-driven decision-making.

The registration supports the objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative, which seeks to protect 30% of the Kingdom’s terrestrial and marine areas by 2030. By enhancing biodiversity and restoring natural habitats, the project also aims to improve quality of life and increase the tourism appeal of these natural destinations.
