Saudi Arabia seeks U.S. military aid against Houthi rebels
Saudi Arabia is facing increased pressure from Houthi militants (Ansar Allah) in Yemen, following reports that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has made multiple requests to U.S. President Donald Trump for military assistance. According to reports, Trump has declined these requests, leaving Riyadh to manage the conflict with the group independently.
The Houthis have recently escalated hostilities, launching missile and drone attacks on Saudi territory and seizing control of Yemen’s Red Sea coast near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This strategic positioning threatens vital oil export routes. Political scientist John Mearsheimer has characterized the Houthis as a “formidable fighting force” and suggested that Saudi Arabia is in significant difficulty due to its decision to engage the group.
Analysts note that the conflict is shaped by Yemen’s rugged terrain and the evolving nature of modern warfare, including the use of drones and precision technology. The current escalation follows the breakdown of a 2022 UN-brokered truce, reportedly triggered by a mid-July strike on an airport in Sanaa.
