AFC reforms Asian Cup schedule and monitors Saudi Arabia security

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has approved significant statutory reforms during an extraordinary congress in Tokyo. A key decision includes moving the Asian Cup tournament to even-numbered years starting in 2032 to align with FIFA’s international football calendar and the AFC’s own electoral cycles.

Simultaneously, the 2027 Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027, faces uncertainty due to regional security concerns. Escalating attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have led the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to raise travel warnings for several Saudi cities, including Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Khobar, to a level 3 “travel advisory/avoid all travel” status.

While the Saudi local organizing committee maintains that preparations are proceeding according to plan, Japan Football Association President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto expressed doubts regarding the feasibility of the tournament under current conditions. AFC officials have indicated that a final decision on whether to proceed, postpone, or seek alternative arrangements may be reached during an AFC council meeting in Bangkok in mid-November.
