Saudi Arabia transfers major football club ownership to Public Investment Fund
The Saudi Arabian football landscape is undergoing a major structural transformation. The Saudi Ministry of Sport has announced the transfer of its shares in major Roshn League clubs to the Public Investment Fund (PIF). This move makes the PIF the 100% owner of Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Ahli, leading to the imminent dissolution of their current boards of directors.
While most clubs will maintain their existing boards temporarily for 90 days to ensure operational continuity, Al-Ittihad has faced immediate changes with the removal of its president, Fahd Sindi, following criticisms of his management. This shift marks a transition toward private sector management and higher professional standards for the league.
On the pitch, the league continues to attract high-profile talent. English striker Ollie Watkins recently joined Al-Hilal in a deal worth approximately $69 million. Following his debut, Watkins praised the competition, stating that the quality and physicality of the Saudi Pro League are “as high as the Premier League.”
