Saudi Arabia East-West Pipeline suspended after drone attacks
Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline, a critical infrastructure component that allows the kingdom to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, has been suspended following drone attacks on September 10 in the Riyadh and Medina regions. The 1,200-kilometer pipeline transports approximately 4 million barrels of oil per day to the port of Yanbu on the Red Sea, representing nearly 4% of the global oil supply.
The shutdown poses a significant threat to global energy security. Industry sources indicate that available oil stocks at the Yanbu terminal may only sustain current export rates for five to seven days. While Saudi Arabia maintains additional reserves at Egyptian terminals in Ain Sukhna and Sidi Kerir, these are not full and are expected to deplete if the pipeline remains offline.
Estimates regarding the duration of repairs vary among market sources. Some suggest that full restoration of the pipeline could take between five and six weeks, while others indicate that partial pumping might resume sooner. The Saudi Ministry of Energy confirmed the facility was halted as a precaution and that technical teams are working to secure the line.
