Saudi-Emirati rapprochement driven by Houthi defense needs
Journalist Salah al-Saqaldi suggests that the recent rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates is primarily driven by Riyadh’s desire to involve Abu Dhabi in defending the Kingdom against Houthi attacks. This shift appears to be a strategic security move rather than an attempt to restore the UAE's previous role in Yemen's internal politics.
Following events in Hadramaut, Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi issued a decision on December 30, 2025, to cancel the mutual defense agreement with the UAE and requested the withdrawal of its forces from Yemeni territory. Consequently, the UAE currently operates outside the Arab coalition framework regarding Yemen, and any potential return to the Yemeni theater would require a formal request from the recognized Yemeni authorities.
While Saudi Arabia maintains significant influence over Yemen's internal affairs, al-Saqaldi notes that Riyadh requires legal cover through the Yemeni authorities to avoid the appearance of direct foreign management. The analysis further suggests that the UAE has a strong interest in re-engaging with Yemen and strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia to mitigate a growing sense of regional isolation.
