Saudi Food and Drug Authority approves Jascade for pulmonary fibrosis
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has approved the registration of Jascade (nerandomilast) for the treatment of adult patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Previously designated as an orphan drug, Jascade is a phosphodiesterase type 4 inhibitor that specifically targets the PDE4B subtype found in the lungs.
By inhibiting PDE4B, the medication increases intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate, which helps limit the expression of pro-fibrotic growth factors and inflammatory cytokines. The approval follows a comprehensive evaluation of the drug's safety and efficacy, supported by the Phase 3 FIBRONEER-IPF study involving 1,177 patients.
Clinical results indicated that both the 9 mg and 18 mg twice-daily doses significantly slowed the decline of lung function compared to a placebo. Common side effects noted during studies included diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and back pain. Use of the medication requires medical supervision.
