Saudi-Pakistan-Turkey defense pact faces scrutiny amid flight incident and Iranian criticism
A defense agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, known as the Makkah Agreement, has drawn scrutiny following a violent incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073. The aircraft, traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with over 170 passengers, experienced a sudden descent of approximately 14,000 feet after an alleged attack in the cockpit. The plane eventually landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Observers have noted the silence from Pakistan and Turkey regarding the flight incident, despite their defense commitments to Saudi Arabia. Analysts suggest this silence may be a political statement, given the flight's destination was Israel and it carried Israeli passengers, while the alleged attacker was Omani and the captain was Indian.
Simultaneously, Iran has criticized the tripartite defense pact, warning that external intervention in Yemen could lead to unwanted regional consequences. Iranian officials expressed concern over reports that thousands of Pakistani troops might be deployed to Saudi Arabia, urging neighboring countries to pursue policies of self-reliance and true brotherhood rather than relying on external security agreements.
