Saudi Water Authority issues new water and sewage service regulations
The Saudi Water Authority has issued new regulations for connecting water and sewage services to approved urban plans and developmental projects. These rules aim to accelerate service delivery, clarify the responsibilities of all involved parties, and provide solutions for projects that cannot be directly linked to public networks.
The regulatory framework establishes a unified system for the relationship between service providers and applicants, defining technical, financial, and regulatory requirements. To address connectivity challenges, the rules allow for alternative solutions: water services may involve network connection or the creation of operational reservoirs, while sewage solutions include connection to the public grid or the establishment of centralized or decentralized treatment systems.
Additionally, the regulations require decentralized sewage treatment providers to meet specific qualification and licensing requirements. The rules also cover procedures for design approval, implementation, connection, and warranty. By reducing temporary and unregulated practices, the authority intends to minimize environmental and visual impacts, support sustainable development, and improve the quality of life and urban landscape in alignment with the National Water Strategy.
