Sault Ste. Marie Border Community Hit by Trump‑Era Canada Tariffs

President Donald Trump’s administration imposed a 50% tariff on a range of Canadian products, followed by an additional 10% tariff using a separate mechanism, citing Canada’s “discriminatory treatment” and recent wildfire smoke. The measures have sharply reduced traffic on the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, hurting businesses that rely on cross‑border trade.

Despite the tension, about 1,100 residents gathered for the annual International Bridge Walk, with Mayor Don Gerrie noting, “We don’t like to say there’s a border there, because we’re twin cities. We’re one family, the countries of Canada and the United States.” The new Gordie Howe Bridge between Detroit and Windsor opened without Trump’s presence, and Rep. Jack Bergman, a longtime supporter of U.S.–Canada ties, has remained silent on the tariffs.

Local officials and merchants fear the sustained trade restrictions will erode the historic economic interdependence of the twin cities.
