Sava: Elderly man found dead and carbonized in agricultural field

A 73-year-old man was found dead and carbonized in an agricultural field in the San Giovanni district of Sava on Monday, August 24, 2026. The body was discovered by workers performing grape harvesting in a neighboring vineyard after they noticed flames and smoke.

Initial investigations by the Carabinieri of Sava and Manduria suggest the man may have been burning brushwood to clear the land when the fire, exacerbated by high summer temperatures, grew out of control. Authorities are investigating whether the man suffered a sudden medical emergency due to the heat or became incapacitated by smoke inhalation before being engulfed by the flames.
