Sava river fish kill linked to wastewater plant discharges

Official analyses have confirmed that wastewater discharges from treatment plants in Zagreb and Velika Gorica significantly contributed to the mass fish kill in the Sava river. The State Inspectorate reported that water samples taken at and downstream from these discharge points contained concentrations of pollutants exceeding legal limits.

The Josip Juraj Strossmayer Water Institute assessed that while these discharges were a major factor, they were not the sole cause. Other contributing environmental factors included water temperatures higher than the annual average and low dissolved oxygen levels. Veterinary inspections have ruled out infectious diseases as the cause of the mass mortality.

These findings contradict previous statements from Zagrebački holding, which had claimed that all output parameters were within prescribed values and that the system was operating normally. The inspection process is ongoing to determine specific responsibilities and potential sanctions.
