Sava Šumanović and Šid residents killed by Ustaše in 1942

Historical accounts detail the 1942 massacre of residents from Šid by Ustaše forces during World War II. On August 28, 1942, a column of approximately 200 people, including professionals such as teachers, lawyers, and workers, was taken to Sremska Mitrovica. The victims were subsequently executed and buried in a mass grave containing quicklime.

Among the victims was the prominent Serbian painter Sava Šumanović, a highly regarded artist whose work spanned impressionism, cubism, and poetic realism. Šumanović had withdrawn from public life in protest against the prohibition of the Cyrillic alphabet in the Independent State of Croatia. He was killed on August 30, 1942.

Also among the deceased was Sima Raketić, a notable hop producer. Family descendants continue to preserve the memory of these victims, noting that the prisoners were subjected to physical abuse and binding with wire before their execution.
