Savannah River Site declares emergency after laboratory fire

A Site Area Emergency was declared at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina on Wednesday, October 28, following a fire at the Savannah River National Laboratory near Aiken. The incident, which began around 5:39 p.m. local time, was reported to involve an unfiltered ground-level radiological release.

Emergency protocols were activated, leading to the temporary closure of site entrances and restrictions on rail, river, and air traffic in the vicinity. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a temporary flight restriction for the area, describing the event as a “nuclear incident.” Employees in the affected Area A were instructed to shelter in place for approximately 30 minutes as a precaution.

The fire, which was confined to a single room, was extinguished within approximately two hours. One employee was reportedly hospitalized with minor injuries. Following radiological surveys that found no detectable levels of contamination outside the facility, the emergency was terminated at 9:45 p.m. Normal operations and traffic resumed on Thursday.
