SAVE America Act faces opposition from left-wing lobbying coalition
The SAVE America Act, also known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, is a piece of election integrity legislation introduced in January 2026 by Senator Mike Lee and other Republican colleagues. The bill seeks to amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 by requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship—such as a U.S. passport, REAL ID, or a combination of photo ID and birth certificate—when registering to vote in federal elections. It also includes a photo ID requirement and prohibits states from accepting registrations lacking such proof.
A coalition of left-leaning groups, including labor unions, LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, and pro-abortion groups, has lobbied against the legislation. The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights organized a coalition letter stating the act is “not necessary to secure American elections” and would “do nothing more than exclude eligible voters.”
Republican sponsors, including Representative Chip Roy, and the White House have criticized the opposition. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis stated the legislation includes “commonsense election integrity measures” like Voter ID. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration.
