SAVE America Act moves forward in Senate discussions

Senators led by Sen. Mike Lee said a recent Republican meeting on the SAVE America Act was “very productive” and that talks are now moving in a “very favorable direction.” Lawmakers are considering using the $95 billion House‑passed budget resolution as a reconciliation vehicle, which would allow the bill to pass with a simple majority of 51 votes instead of the 60 needed to overcome a filibuster.

The proposal would limit the Act to a grant program that lets states voluntarily adopt voter‑identification requirements and proof‑of‑citizenship verification for voter registration. Senate Budget Committee Chairman Ron Johnson envisions an 11‑committee package with Homeland Security playing a lead role. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Rep. Keith Self reported that about 20 Republican senators have pledged to keep the chamber in session and work through the August recess to advance the measure.
