Save the Children promotes disaster preparedness for youth in New Zealand

Save the Children is advocating for children to be central to emergency planning and preparedness efforts in New Zealand. Ahead of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the organization warned that while young people are often among the most vulnerable during natural hazards like floods, storms, earthquakes, and tsunamis, their specific needs and voices are frequently overlooked.

Jacqui Southey, Save the Children’s Programmes and Advocacy Director, stated that involving children in age-appropriate preparedness helps them build confidence and reduce fear, allowing them to become active participants in community safety.

The Kia Rite Get Ready! programme, funded by QBE and delivered with partner Tātai Aho Rau Core Education, is implementing this approach. The initiative works with early childhood education centres in Wellington, Nelson-Marlborough, and Hawke’s Bay to provide tamariki, educators, and whānau with practical skills. Participants receive Go-Bags for essential supplies, tools for emergency planning, and training for educators to create safe, child-friendly spaces during emergencies.
