Savings alternatives emerge as interest rates challenge Livret A yields

Recent increases in interest rates by the European Central Bank have spurred interest in short-term savings, leading some financial products to offer higher yields than the regulated Livret A. While the Livret A currently offers a 1.70% rate that is exempt from taxes and social levies, commercial banks and online platforms are providing promotional rates ranging from 3% to 4.5% on boosted savings accounts or term accounts.

However, savers must consider several factors when comparing these options. Unlike the Livret A, promotional rates on commercial accounts are subject to a single flat-rate tax, which significantly reduces net returns. Additionally, boosted accounts often feature temporary rates that are revised downward after a set period, and term accounts may require funds to be locked for several months.

For savers who have reached the Livret A deposit limit of 22,950 euros or the LDDS limit of 12,000 euros, alternatives include non-capped traditional bank accounts, which allow for immediate withdrawals, or term accounts, which may offer higher rates in exchange for restricted liquidity.
