Savithri Sreedharan, acclaimed Malayalam actress, dies

Veteran Malayalam theatre and film actress Savithri Sreedharan has passed away at her residence in Kozhikode. Reports on her age vary between 83 and 85. She had been suffering from age-related ailments.

Sreedharan enjoyed a career in theatre spanning more than four decades, beginning in the amateur scene at age 16. She worked with several prominent drama troupes and was a recipient of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award for her contributions to theatre.

In cinema, she made her debut in 1991 in ‘Kadavu’, directed by M T Vasudevan Nair. She gained widespread national recognition for her performance as a mother in the 2018 film ‘Sudani from Nigeria’. Her work in that film earned her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actress in 2019 and a Special Mention at the 66th National Film Awards.
