Sawes tests high-altitude wind power airship in China
The Chinese company Sawes has successfully tested the S4000, a high-altitude wind power system designed to generate electricity at altitudes of 4,000 meters. The system utilizes a large helium-filled airship, with a wingspan comparable to a Boeing 747, featuring integrated turbines to capture the stronger and more consistent winds found far above ground-level obstacles like buildings and mountains.
During recent trials at a testing base in northwest China, the S4000 completed a full operational cycle, including ascent, station-keeping, power generation, and a controlled return to Earth. The electricity produced is transmitted to the ground via a cable that also serves as an anchor.
Unlike traditional wind farms that require permanent concrete foundations and towers, this mobile system can be deployed rapidly in various locations, such as deserts, mountainous regions, or areas affected by natural disasters. The technology is designed to connect directly to conventional power grids and has an estimated operational lifespan of twenty years.
