Saxmundham rail junction to be upgraded for Sizewell C freight
The Saxmundham rail junction on the East Suffolk line is scheduled for a major renewal to support the Sizewell C construction project. The upgrade is part of the Sizewell Transport Strategy, which aims to deliver 60% of all construction materials via rail and sea to reduce local road congestion, heavy goods vehicle reliance, and pollution.
The project involves modernizing the existing manually operated junction by installing a powered crossover. This will allow trains to switch between the Leiston branch and the East Suffolk line more efficiently. Once completed, the infrastructure will be managed through an integrated signaling system.
In addition to the junction work, engineers will perform improvements between Westerfield and Halesworth, including the installation of new signaling equipment. Work at Bealings crossing will also include the installation of safety equipment. These engineering programs are expected to affect Greater Anglia services between Lowestoft and Ipswich.
