Saxony castles highlight medieval heritage and restoration

Historical castle sites in Saxony are drawing attention for their preservation and architectural significance.

Burg Kriebstein, located near Leipzig, is recognized as one of Saxony’s most beautiful and well-preserved knightly castles. Built around 1400 as a spur castle on a steep rock overlooking the Zschopau Valley, the site features a 45-meter residential tower and a nearly untouched medieval structure. Its design follows a tower-ring layout, including a gatehouse, chapel, and kitchen.

In another location, the Liebenstein castle ruins have undergone significant restoration efforts. Managed by the Bürgerverein Liebenstein, volunteers dedicated nearly 5,000 hours between 2008 and 2021 to uncover walls and partially renew the structures. These efforts, which included restoring a drawbridge, have brought the site out of a state of decay where it had been covered by earth and debris for decades.
