Sachsen leads German education rankings in 2026 monitor
The 2026 Bildungsmonitor, conducted by the Institute of the German Economy (IW) for the Initiative Neue Soziale Marktwirtschaft (INSM), reveals varying educational outcomes across German states. Conversely, Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) ranks near the bottom, placing 14th out of 16 states. NRW faces significant challenges in school quality and vocational education, with lower-than-average spending per student and declining competencies in mathematics and science.
In Hamburg, the education system maintains a strong third-place ranking, particularly noted for its successful transition from daycare to school and language support for non-native speakers. While the report highlights regional disparities, it also warns of a nationwide trend of declining competencies in reading and natural sciences, which may impact future economic prosperity and the skilled labor force.
