Saxony permits 60 km/h speed for re-imported Simson mopeds
Saxony's Infrastructure Minister, Regina Kraushaar, has issued a decree allowing re-imported Simson mopeds to travel at speeds of up to 60 km/h. This new regulation applies to DDR-manufactured vehicles that were registered by February 1992, including models that were previously exported to countries like Hungary.
Previously, the 60 km/h speed privilege was reserved only for original DDR-era mopeds protected under existing grandfather clauses. Under the new rule, these re-imported vehicles can operate using insurance license plates and the AM driving license class.
Minister Kraushaar stated that this is a first step toward greater equality for moped enthusiasts. The Saxon cabinet intends to submit a resolution to the Bundesrat on October 16, urging the federal government to advocate at the European level for allowing technically comparable two- and three-wheeled light vehicles to reach 60 km/h under standard EU type-approval, without requiring special individual exemptions.
