Saxony Premier proposes Autounion Sachsen GmbH to secure VW Zwickau

Saxony Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has proposed a 'Plan B' to secure the future of the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau beyond 2031. The proposal involves establishing a new company, Autounion Sachsen GmbH, which would allow the factory to be opened to additional investors beyond Volkswagen.

To increase competitiveness against other production sites, such as VW’s facility in Bratislava, Slovakia, Kretschmer suggested that the plant must adopt more flexible working hours and move outside current collective bargaining frameworks. He offered a ten-year location guarantee and stable capacity utilization in exchange for these adjustments.

Industry experts suggest this model could attract manufacturers seeking European production capacity without requiring an entire plant. Meanwhile, broader tensions rise at Volkswagen as the company faces massive overcapacity. The IG Metall union has warned of a difficult period ahead, as the company pursues a deep transformation program aimed at multi-billion euro savings and significant job cuts.
