Germany and US expand defense cooperation amid missile delays
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is traveling to Washington to meet with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to deepen defense industrial cooperation. The discussions focus on expanding partnerships regarding the F-35 stealth jet and the planned domestic production of Patriot missile guidance systems in Germany.
However, the procurement of Tomahawk cruise missiles faces significant hurdles. Internal government documents suggest that the conflict in Iran and limited US production capacity could delay deliveries to Germany for several years, potentially pushing the first arrivals to 2031 instead of the originally intended 2029. Additionally, costs for the associated Typhon launch systems may double the initial 200 million Euro estimate.
In separate naval developments, Pistorius announced plans for a fourth Class 424 reconnaissance ship to bolster maritime and cyber surveillance capabilities. Meanwhile, TKMS has secured a major 6.3 billion Euro contract for four MEKO A-200 DEU class frigates for the German Navy.
