Saxony requests evaluation of wind energy land targets

The state of Saxony has submitted a proposal to the upcoming Energy Ministers' Conference to review the 2032 land area targets for wind energy expansion. The Saxon Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labour, Energy and Climate Protection is calling on the federal government to promptly provide the evaluation agreed upon in the coalition agreement.

Energy Minister Dirk Panter stated that while renewable energy expansion is essential for energy independence and cost stability, the assumptions regarding future electricity demand must be updated. He noted that demand is rising due to data centers and the electrification of industry, transport, and heating.

Saxony aims to ensure that land targets account for specific regional geographic, topographic, and meteorological conditions. Currently, Saxony has designated approximately 0.2 percent of its land for wind energy, while federal mandates require 1.3 percent by the end of 2027 and 2.0 percent by the end of 2032. The state intends to use this evaluation to align regional contribution values with local potential and obstacles to increase public acceptance.
