Saylor Graham survives shooting at Silver Rail Elementary

Seven-year-old Saylor Graham is in stable condition at a Portland hospital after being shot in the face during a mass shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. The attack, carried out by 17-year-old Griffin J. John II, resulted in the deaths of three students and a teacher.

Graham, who has a rare CASK gene mutation that affects her physical and cognitive development, is non-verbal and uses a wheelchair. The condition also causes dysphagia, making swallowing difficult. She was known in her community as the high school’s adopted ‘Sparrow,’ a program where students raise funds for her medical expenses.

Community members have launched fundraisers to support the family, with GoFundMe pages raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in a single day. Graham’s parents are remaining by her side as she recovers.
