SB Energy seeks New York IPO for data center projects
SB Energy, a subsidiary of the Japanese group SoftBank, has filed for an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. The company aims to attract investors through a portfolio of data center projects, including the large-scale PORTS-Pike project in Ohio.
As global investment in data centers is projected by PwC to reach $31.6 trillion by 2050, the industry faces significant risks common to large-scale construction, such as material shortages, labor scarcity, and planning delays. SB Energy focuses on providing buildings and systems rather than chips or servers, insulating itself from certain component price fluctuations. However, the sector faces critical hurdles, including energy access and the lengthy process of securing electrical grid interconnection, which can take up to ten years.
