Sébastien Lecornu outlines 2027 budget plans and denies presidential candidacy

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is preparing the 2027 budget amidst economic stagnation and political uncertainty. During a government seminar, Lecornu emphasized that he is not a candidate for the 2027 presidential election, describing his administration as a 'government of mission.'

To consolidate public finances without increasing taxes, the government is exploring spending cuts. Key proposals include limiting pension increases for high earners and implementing stricter controls on sick leave. The government has already committed 10 billion euros in additional funding to ministries including Defense, Interior, Justice, Education, Research, and Ecology.

Lecornu also addressed the agricultural crisis caused by recent heatwaves and droughts, promising a rescue plan by the end of the year and a recovery plan for next year. He warned that failing to pass a budget would create a 'grave financial situation' and add 'domestic disorder to international disorder.' The budget is expected to be presented in late September, with a focus on reversible measures due to the upcoming presidential election.
