Sébastien Lecornu faces protests in Le Porge over wildfire response
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu faced intense protests from residents in Le Porge, a community heavily impacted by wildfires that burned 420,000 acres of forest land in southwestern France in late July. Approximately 200 residents, many dressed in black, gathered outside the town hall to express anger after Lecornu failed to meet with them directly during his visit. The community suffered significant losses, including the destruction of 183 homes.
Following the demonstration, Lecornu spoke from Mérignac near Bordeaux. He acknowledged the residents' anger as “absolutely natural” given their losses but rejected conspiracy theories regarding the government's handling of the fires. He stated his intention to restore “truth and logic” to the situation. To address public concerns, the Prime Minister requested that regional authorities and fire services meet with citizens to provide a detailed, step-by-step explanation of the firefighting tactics and resources deployed during the crisis.
