Sébastien Lecornu to visit Mayotte on August 26-27

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to visit Mayotte on August 26 and 27. This marks his first trip to an overseas territory since his appointment as head of government.

Matignon stated the visit aims to conduct a comprehensive review of the department's future. Key agenda items include assessing reconstruction efforts following Cyclone Chido, addressing illegal immigration, managing the upcoming school year, and evaluating healthcare access. The Prime Minister will also discuss infrastructure, transport projects, and economic revitalization.

The visit follows the August 2025 law for the refoundation of Mayotte, which allocates nearly four billion euros for investments through 2031. These funds are intended for water networks, housing, public equipment, and the construction of a prison. The trip occurs amid ongoing local concerns regarding security, housing, and the strategic importance of the island in the Indian Ocean.
