France budget 2027: Mélenchon vows censure as Lecornu warns of disorder
French political tensions are escalating over the 2027 budget. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the La France insoumise (LFI) leader and 2027 presidential candidate, has pledged to censure the government of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. Mélenchon argues the proposed budget will worsen the French economy and has proposed radical alternatives, including taxing large fortunes and multinationals, implementing a superprofits tax, and asking the European Central Bank to freeze state debts, specifically those from the Covid period.
Prime Minister Lecornu has responded by warning parliamentarians against delaying the budget adoption until after the presidential election, calling such a delay “the choice of disorder.” He cautioned that failing to pass a budget could lead to higher interest rates, impacting the state and households. Lecornu also warned that relying on special laws to bypass the budget could cost the country at least 0.5% of its GDP.
Economy Minister Roland Lescure has strongly criticized Mélenchon's debt-related proposals, stating that attempting to cancel or freeze parts of the national debt would trigger a financial crisis and violate European treaties, potentially forcing France out of the euro.
