SBB invests 500 million francs to modernize Zurich S-Bahn fleet

SBB is investing approximately 500 million Swiss francs to modernize a significant portion of the Zurich S-Bahn fleet. This initiative targets second and third-generation trains, including 61 DTZ and 69 Regio-Dosto models, to extend their service life from 25 to 32 years.

Passenger improvements include upgraded interiors with new seat upholstery, flooring, LED lighting, and clearer signage. Additionally, the installation of mobile-transparent window panes will enhance cellular reception for the more than 700,000 daily commuters. The project also focuses on increasing energy efficiency and safety.

The modernization is a collaborative effort funded by SBB, ZVV, the Swiss Confederation, and several cantons, including Aargau, Glarus, St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Schwyz, Thurgau, and Zug. While first-generation trains are slated for replacement by Siemens Mobility in the 2030s, SBB is also renewing 24 IR-Dosto long-distance trains, with the first prototype expected to enter service in winter 2027.
