SBI Group and Kyobo Life pilot direct Japan-Korea stablecoin transfers

SBI Group and Kyobo Life Insurance have successfully completed a proof-of-concept pilot for cross-border transactions between Japan and South Korea using yen-denominated stablecoins. The project, conducted on the Canton Network blockchain test environment, demonstrated a direct exchange between Japanese yen (JPY) and Korean won (KRW) stablecoins.

By bypassing the US dollar as an intermediary currency, the model aims to reduce transaction costs, shorten processing times, and mitigate exchange rate risks. This marks the first instance in the South Korean insurance industry to verify such a process for institutional fund transfers. The pilot also validated operational workflows for the safe receipt, management, and settlement of digital assets transferred from overseas.

The two companies intend to expand their cooperation within the Web3 ecosystem, exploring new business models in digital asset exchange, asset management, and international settlement as regulatory frameworks for digital assets continue to evolve.
