SBI Holdings acquires Singapore’s Coinhako to expand Asian crypto services
SBI Holdings completed the purchase of a majority stake in Singapore‑based crypto platform Coinhako on July 16 after receiving approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The deal gives SBI control of Coinhako’s subsidiary Hako Technology, which holds a Major Payment Institution licence, and provides access to more than 400,000 retail and institutional customers.
The acquisition is part of SBI’s broader strategy to build a regulated digital‑asset corridor linking Japan and Southeast Asia. Through its unit SBI Ventures Asset Pte Ltd, SBI used a mix of newly issued shares and purchases from existing shareholders. While financial terms were not disclosed, the move complements recent SBI initiatives, including tokenization of Japanese equities, the launch of the yen‑backed stablecoin JPYSC, and cross‑border payment infrastructure built on blockchain. Singapore is positioned as the first regional hub for SBI’s expanding ecosystem of regulated crypto exchanges, stablecoins, tokenized assets and on‑chain settlement services.
