SBS announces 2027 Census Explorer and digital scripted slate

SBS has announced its programming and digital initiatives for 2027. A key feature will be the return of the Australian Census Explorer in June 2027. Utilizing data from the 2026 Census and previous years, the tool will provide insights into Australia’s evolving demographics, including language groups, gender identity, sexual orientation, and First Nations culture.

The Census Explorer is intended to serve both editorial purposes and as a commercial resource for marketers to understand changing consumer behaviors. It will incorporate updated data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics to allow for longitudinal comparisons of community changes.

In its scripted content slate, SBS is prioritizing Digital Originals. This short-form series initiative, developed with NITV and Screen Australia, includes titles such as ‘Mangrove Mansion’, ‘InPretty Deadly’, and ‘Tantrum’. The slate focuses on diverse narratives ranging from supernatural themes to comedy and community dynamics.
