SBT and Celso Portiolli face veterinary forensic request in animal mistreatment case

The Public Prosecutor's Office of São Paulo (MP-SP) has expressed support for conducting a veterinary forensic examination in a civil public action against the broadcaster SBT and presenter Celso Portiolli. The lawsuit investigates allegations of animal mistreatment involving a frog used during a segment on the program ‘Domingo Legal’.

The legal action, initiated by lawyer and state deputy candidate Thaís Viotto, follows an episode where the amphibian escaped within the studio during an entertainment segment. Animal protection entities claim the animal suffered intense stress, improper handling, and excessive exposure to lights and sounds.

A preliminary injunction issued by Judge Maria Helena Steffen Toniolo Bueno requires SBT to ensure that any live animals used in productions are under direct veterinary supervision and follow strict management protocols to prevent injury or suffering. The court has established a fine of R$ 100,000 per occurrence for non-compliance. While SBT and Portiolli have stated they follow all applicable legal protocols and previously indicated they were ready for a judgment based on current evidence, the MP-SP has now requested a judicial expert be appointed to conduct the forensic analysis.
