Ceuta scabies outbreak sparks dispute over military base hygiene

A scabies outbreak among military personnel in Ceuta has sparked a dispute between the Spanish Army and military associations. While the Army's Ground Command initially confirmed 24 cases, the Association of Spanish Troop and Seamen (ATME) and the Professional Association of Armed Forces Non-Commissioned Officers (Asfaspro) suggest the numbers may be higher, with some reports indicating over 60 affected individuals.

The Army has stated that the infections are not linked to the recent mass arrival of irregular migrants, instead attributing the spread to high humidity levels in the area. However, ATME has criticized this explanation, arguing that it points to “grave deficiencies in the hygiene” of military bases and training areas. The association is demanding transparency regarding the maintenance and habitability of the facilities.

The outbreak coincides with a broader health crisis in Ceuta. Healthcare professionals have warned of potential hospital collapses due to the pressure from migrant arrivals and the spread of diseases. Military representatives have also noted that personnel are working shifts exceeding thirteen hours amidst the ongoing migration crisis, adding further strain to the situation.
