Monforte de Lemos nursing home confirms active scabies outbreak

The Galician Health Department (Consellería de Sanidade) has confirmed an active scabies outbreak at the DomusVi elderly care residence in Monforte de Lemos. The outbreak was initially declared on June 18 with 16 confirmed cases, all of whom reportedly received treatment. However, the situation remains active following six new diagnoses, bringing the total number of affected individuals to at least 22.

According to health protocols, an outbreak is only considered concluded eight weeks after the identification of the final case. Symptoms of the condition can take between two and eight weeks to manifest.

The local branch of the CIG union has denounced the situation, demanding transparency regarding the measures taken since the initial detection. The union also highlighted a critical shortage of staff at the facility, claiming that current staffing ratios are insufficient to provide safe and dignified care. They argue that this lack of personnel has led to significant workload increases for employees and may have hindered the effective implementation of human scabies protocols in caregiving institutions.
