Scalp cryotherapy may help preserve hair during chemotherapy
Scalp cryotherapy, commonly known as the cold cap, is being utilized as an alternative to reduce hair loss caused by chemotherapy. Oncologist Sabina Aleixo explains that the cold causes blood vessels in the scalp to contract, which reduces the amount of medication reaching the hair roots.
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicated that approximately half of the patients using the cap maintained more than 50% of their hair following chemotherapy cycles. However, the technique is not suitable for all cases, such as certain blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma, and requires medical evaluation. Potential side effects include headaches, intense cold sensations, and discomfort, and the treatment sessions are extended to include cooling periods before, during, and after medication administration.
