Scanno considers ban on approaching deer after tourist encounters

The municipality of Scanno, located in the Abruzzo Lazio e Molise National Park, is considering a new ordinance to prohibit visitors from approaching deer near the local lake area. This measure follows two recent incidents where male deer charged tourists who had surrounded the animals.

In both cases, the animals reacted to being approached too closely, knocking men to the ground. While no physical injuries were reported, the incidents have highlighted the risks posed by tourists attempting to photograph, pet, or feed the wildlife.

Mayor Giovanni Mastrogiovanni emphasized that the goal is to protect both visitors and the animals by ensuring their natural behavior is not altered. The situation is particularly sensitive during the mating season, when male deer exhibit more territorial and unpredictable behavior. Local authorities are urging the public to maintain a safe distance and respect the animals' space.
