Scanno considers new rules to protect deer from tourist interference

The municipality of Scanno, located in the Abruzzo Lazio e Molise National Park, is considering a new ordinance to prohibit approaching or disturbing wildlife. This follows recent incidents where male deer charged at tourists near the local lake.

Reports indicate that the animals reacted defensively after being surrounded, photographed at close range, and touched by visitors. While no serious injuries occurred, the incidents have sparked concerns regarding public safety and environmental protection.

WWF Abruzzo has criticized the irresponsible behavior of tourists seeking social media content or direct contact with animals. The organization expressed concern over potential proposals to relocate the deer to more remote areas or enclosures, arguing that animals should not be penalized for human misconduct. The local mayor, Giovanni Mastrogianni, aims to implement regulations to maintain the balance between human presence and local fauna.
