Scansano installs micro-hydroelectric turbine for Life Turbines project

Acquedotto del Fiora has completed the first phase of a micro-hydroelectric installation in Scansano, Italy. The project is part of the European Life Turbines initiative, which explores using urban drinking water networks to generate electricity by regulating water pressure.

The Scansano site serves as the sole Italian pilot within the European project, which includes 12 pilot sites in Spain. The initiative aims to generate nearly 1 million kWh annually and prevent more than 250 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The installed turbine has an average nominal power of 35.59 kW.

Following the installation at the Roggetone location, the project will move into a second phase involving civil and electrical works at the maneuver chamber before the system becomes operational. The project has also been named a finalist in the Innovation category for the 2025 European Sustainable Energy Awards.
