Óscar de la Renta: the legacy of a Dominican fashion icon

Dominican-American designer Óscar de la Renta, who passed away on October 20, 2014, at the age of 82, left a significant mark on international high fashion. Born in Santo Domingo in 1932, his professional journey included studying painting in Spain and apprenticing under Cristóbal Balenciaga, an experience that helped shape his aesthetic vision.

After working in Paris at Lanvin and in New York with Elizabeth Arden, De la Renta founded his own fashion house in 1965. His designs became synonymous with elegance and luxury, characterized by refined cuts, elaborate embroidery, and sophisticated colors.

His influence extended to global political and cultural figures. He famously dressed several U.S. First Ladies, including Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, and Michelle Obama. His work also gained prominence on Hollywood red carpets, worn by celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Penélope Cruz, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gómez. One of his final notable works was the wedding dress for Amal Alamuddin. Following his death, the fashion house has continued to develop collections under new creative direction, maintaining the brand's established identity.
